Also called sal ammoniac, it is used as an ingredient in nutritive media for yeast, in cleaning products, and as cough medicine. Its expectorant action is caused by irritative action on the bronchial mucosa. This causes the production of excess respiratory tract fluid which presumably is easier to cough up. In several countries sal ammoniac is used to spice up liquorice-type dark candies (Finland's salmiakki is a popular example), and as a flavoring for vodkas. Ammonium chloride (buffered with potassium phosphate) is a systemic acidifier, to help maintain pH within normal levels.* It may support the mechanisms involved in healthy levels of creatinine, BUN, uric acid, chlorides, and normal nitrogen retention.* Suggested Use: As a dietary supplement, 1 to 3 tablets daily with meals, or as directed by a healthcare practitioner. CAUTION: May have a gentle diuretic effect. Not recommended for children under 12 years of age unless under the supervision of a healthcare practitioner.
